Marisa Monte

The music of Marisa Monte has been felt from a very young age. She started with percussion, receiving a drum kit as a gift at nine years old, and then took up the guitar, composing her first songs. In her adolescence, she explored operatic singing and participated in theatrical productions. In 1985, she traveled to Italy to study singing, but Brazilian music called her back. In Venice, Nelson Motta heard her and invited her to participate in a show in Rio de Janeiro in 1987. Although she had not yet released her first album, she was already seen as a voice with great potential in Brazilian popular music. Her first album, *MM*, was released in 1988, showcasing a varied repertoire that included a George Gershwin song and a reggae version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine".

Her second album, *Mais*, from 1991, was a turning point. It not only marked her debut as a songwriter but also opened the doors to her international career, being well-received in countries such as the United States, Japan, and several nations in Europe and Ibero-America. On this album, she shared space with her own songs and interpretations by established artists like Caetano Veloso and Arnaldo Antunes, in addition to paying homage to figures like Cartola. In 1994, with *Verde, Anil, Amarelo, Cor-de-Rosa e Carvão*, she consolidated her path, with the collaboration of musicians of the caliber of Gilberto Gil, Carlinhos Brown, and Laurie Anderson.
