Chappell Roan

The sound of Chappell Roan emerges from a place where camp and pop blend with the energy of a drag queen stage. Her songs flow between bright synthesizers and lyrics that play with vulnerability and excess, as if each note sought to balance sweetness with the unexpected. There’s something in her voice—a tone that oscillates between innocence and irony—that makes even the most polished arrangements sound like a knowing wink. It’s not just the aesthetics that define her music, but that ability to sound at once nostalgic and modern, as if she had borrowed the echoes of the '80s and '90s to turn them into something of her own and urgent.

The leap that took her from obscurity to the spotlight wasn’t gradual, but almost accidental. In 2024, after opening for Olivia Rodrigo on some dates of her *GUTS* tour, a video of hers on TikTok went viral. Overnight, she went from playing small clubs to filling festivals like Coachella and Governor’s Ball in the same year. But the curious thing is that her explosion didn’t come with a radical change in her sound, but with the confirmation that something in her proposal was already resonating louder than it seemed. The album that launched her, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, had come out in 2023, but it was in 2024 when the songs began to pile up on the charts: six of her tracks coincided on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.

More about Chappell Roan

Biography

Before that, there were years of silent building. Chappell Roan—a name she adopted in 2016 in honor of her grandfather, Dennis K. Chappell, and a song from The Strawberry Roan by Curley Fletcher—started posting covers on YouTube at fourteen, which caught the attention of labels like Atlantic Records. Her first EP, School Nights, came out in 2017, but it was "Good Hurt" that caught critics’ attention for its unexpected vocal maturity in someone so young. Later, in 2020, "Pink Pony Club" became an unofficial summer anthem in the UK, reaching number one on British charts. However, the real turning point came when she signed with Island Records in 2023 and released her debut album, which, months later, climbed to number two on the Billboard 200. The song "Good Luck, Babe!"—which reached number four in the US—finished consolidating her as a global phenomenon, while "Hot to Go!" became another multi-platinum hit. In 2025, her name appeared at the Grammy Awards as the winner of the Best New Artist prize, and "The Subway" gave her a second number one in the UK.
