Bobby Darin

Bobby Darin was more than just a singer who packed crowds in the 1950s. His sound was a bold blend: he mixed the smooth swing of the great crooners with the newly born rock and roll, sometimes venturing into folk or country without losing the rhythm. He recorded with an energy that seemed straight from a live stage, even if the studio was often his only witness. His voice, both deep and melodic, adapted to any style, but where he truly shone was in those songs that sounded like instant anthems.

In 1958, when rock was still finding its place in the world, he already had one foot in success. With Splish Splash—a song he co-wrote—he sold millions of copies almost by accident. But it was Dream Lover that cemented his reputation as a composer of unforgettable ballads. Then came Mack the Knife, that classic everyone hums without realizing it, which in 1959 earned him two Grammy Awards: one for Best New Artist and another for Record of the Year. His film career also took off strongly: in 1962, a Golden Globe for his role in Come September, alongside Sandra Dee, his then-wife.

More about Bobby Darin

Biography

The 1960s found him changing course. He turned to politics, supporting Robert F. Kennedy's presidential campaign, and was at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on the night of the 1968 assassination. That same year, he discovered that the woman he believed was his mother was actually his grandmother, and the one he thought was his sister was his biological mother. The revelation plunged him into a crisis that temporarily pulled him away from the spotlight.

His health was always fragile, but he never slowed down. Even when he learned his heart wouldn’t give him much more time, he kept recording and performing. He died in 1973, at age 37, after heart surgery. He left behind a legacy of songs that still resonate, but also the story of an artist who lived—and sang—with intensity, never minding the limits.
