More about Astrud Gilberto
Biography
Between 1965 and 2002, her career was a journey without borders: she recorded The Astrud Gilberto Album and Look to the Rainbow, alternating between jazz standards, Portuguese songs, and even versions in French or Italian. But beyond the albums, what defines her legacy is how her voice — thin yet full of nuances — made bossa nova stop being a local genre and become a global language. In 1992, the Latin Jazz USA Award, and in 2002, her induction into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame were not tributes to an artist, but to someone who redefined how Brazilian music is heard. She died in 2023, but her influence lives on in every version of Desafinado that George Michael sang in a duet with her in 1996, or in the tribute that Polish singer Basia paid her with the song Astrud.
